Urogynaecology workshop 101 – back to basics: Sure Medical proudly supported a great initiative for pelvic floor training by Dr Jeffery, Dr Kruger and Prof Roovers, held at Groote Schuur Hospital. The workshop was well-attended workshop by specialist from different parts of the country and presented valuable content and good interaction.

Sure Medical continues to support pelvic floor solutions and are working together with SA key opinion leaders to find a solid replacement in time to provide ongoing positive outcomes for patients. In the interim, Astora may be announcing certain key products to remain available.

Endo Health Solutions saw shares drop 20% today after announcing plans to close its Astora Women’s Health biz in March due to concerns over future product liability related to mesh implants, despite posting a solid earnings beat for Q4 and the full year 2015. The company, along with other medical device makers, have been hit with series of lawsuits related to transvaginal meshes, intended to treat pelvic organ prolapse, mostly in the USA. The FDA put all pelvic floor mesh products under its most stringent level of review, Class III, in January. Endo said it sought to divest itself of the Astora Women’s Health unit last year, but did not manage to sell the biz, and will now being winding down the business with a closure targeted at March 31.

Despite investment in FDA522 studies, extensive existing clinical literature supporting the success of Astora implants, The decision made by Endo has shocked the medical industry. Specialists are saddened and concerned to see a market leader withdrawing its product from the market.
